Trevor Jackson @ RBMA

Love this guy.

So much of what he has to say (especially the reasons for making music) really resonate with me.

And damn he’s got a back catalogue/portfolio that anyone would be proud of.

Worth an hour of your time for sure.

SCI—FI SOUL

music_ quaid_ scifi

Aside from the cosmic b-boy musings of ‘Reflections…’ Quaid is perhaps best well known, on these pages at least, for his ongoing love affair with soulful electronic music — citing the big ‘D’ and some of it’s visionary residents as a major influence. Sci—Fi Soul is a term Quaid uses to describe his music, not just because of his Sci-Fi obsession but more blatantly from sampling such classic scores as Gill Mellé’s ‘Andromeda Strain’ & Lalo Schifrin’s ‘THX 1138′.

But whether it’s the Gilles Peterson-championed body music of ‘Feel’, the synth-funk of ‘Raw Shit’ or collaborative pieces with vocalist’s like Nigerian soul-boy Ade on ‘City on Fire’, Quaid’s aesthetic remains the same – raw, emotive electronic music.

This is an ongoing project, so we’ll be adding more back catalogue, edits and new material in the coming weeks, hope ur feeling it.

Sunday Morning 10am (Part 3)

Sunday10am_ music

In retrospect it probably shouldn’t have taken so long.

Kenneth Branagh’s wonderful portrayal of Swedish detective Wallander is an obvious candidate to fill that post Wire, between Mad Men seasons viewing lull I’ve found myself in. It’s Inspector Morse with arthouse pretensions, all moody landscapes , edgy cinematography and meaningful pauses. There are enough amazing scandi interiors to make my wife swoon and every so often the soundtrack (consciously or otherwise) seems to reference that dearly missed Swedish master Esbjorn Svensson-what’s not to love?

I guess you could write a book on the effect of ‘place’ on music, how much the shattered post industrial landscape has shaped the sound of Detroit techno, or the influence of recession ravaged New York on the creation of disco and punk.

Svensson’s music seems so connected with, and complimentary to the bleak and stunning Swedish landscape, it’s hard not to consider it the perfect accompaniment to Wallander (even though it’s not in the show).

It’s also classic Sunday morning music, so perhaps you should upgrade the croissant to a cinnamon bun and get into the spirit of the thing a little.

FRIDAY FUSION

music_ unified theory

Been another long week, time to relax in Fusion’s warm embrace — this time we head over to the Land of the Rising Sun with Japanese Jazz legend Terumasa Hino. Traditionally more of a straight ahead jazzer, on this particular number he goes for a tight little groove and uplifting vocal to work his licks over. Taken from ’78’s ‘Hip Seagull’ LP.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

With the whole Plastic People thing this week was turning into a bit of a downer, plus earlier in the week Guru (Gang Starr) was in a coma, thankfully he’s come through & is expected to make a full recovery —  so here’s a timely reminder of what a legend the man is.

SAVE PLASTIC PEOPLE

Unbelievably there’s talk that London’s most seminal nite club ‘Plastic People’ might have it’s license revoked.

More details here. There’s an online petition here. This simply can’t be allowed to happen.

Friday Fusion

Thought we would take a slight detour for this week’s Friday Fusion .

This footage comes from the RBMA event at the RFH a couple of weeks back, we were gonna head down at one point, but were slightly put off by the thought of carl craig disappearing up his own backside- looked like we missed a hell of a session.

The perfect fusion of new technology and old school musical talent.

ACTRESS

When it comes to new music there really aren’t that many cats out there who are doing it for me. But when you start to break away from the dominant scenes, it’s good to know you can still find people like Actress just doing their thing.

He can come down on the more dissonant electronic side, which isn’t really my vibe, but he did a dope mix on FACT last year which hit all the right spots; a little bit of boogie, electro instrumentals and the freaky funk side of 80’s new wave — influences u can hear in the tune I’m posting here.

He’s got a new LP out on Honest Jon’s later in the Spring, you can hear a few snippets on there now which are sounding quite hard edged, let’s hope he puts the funk back in.

FRIDAY FUSION

Thinking it was time we posted a latin fusion number. ‘Atlas’ has the dopest opening funk break before the latin rhythm kicks in and the tempo builds up to a furious crescendo. All about the rhythm section here, as it should be and you know it makes sense. Wish the drummer in my band could maintain this tempo without dropping beats….
