Can’t wait for this one-Inie and Karen sure know how host a party.
It’s a slightly different kinda of vibe to the shows we usually play-a little bit more intimate and potentailly really quite sweaty (and that’s just Christoph). We’re gonna be playing a load of new stuff , including the first ever play of our just finished AD Bourke remix for Citinite. (we’re really excited about that one!!)

Come down if you’re local (half the door goes to Haiti, so it will be good for your soul as well)

New Venue, new logo, same killer party.

Ain’t It Black is back! After a mystic hiatus, the underground house-party extraordinaire of Shoreditch will be holding its relaunch party at East Village.

I can’t freakin’ wait. It’s Ulysses 82’s spiritual home and we will be setting lazers to kill for this one.

More details here.

Book it in.

DOPE ON PLASTIC

clubs_ mixtapes_ music

Grand-Master-FlashBangin’ session at Plastic People last night, full props to Alex Nut, Floating Points & the rest of the spinners. Heard a solid selection of new skool joints, but the real highlight for me came from a 20 minute rotation of Golden Era Hip Hop classics. Not the obvious selections you’d get on some lame compilation but the real deal.

Much like this killer set from Jez at Innersounds. Posted this in our previous incarnation, but long overdue a re visit.

AIB’s First Birthday

clubs_ edits_ music_ ulysses82

Thursday is the Ain’t it Black 1st birthday party at Favela chic.

It’s gonna be a monster session. A celebration of an amazing year of finding new music and making new friends.  There’s live music from Olivier DaySoul and the usual cut price/fully loaded, high fiving deejays.

Come down, if you’re local. Rumours abound of some crazy-assed fancy dress costumes (“just call me snake”) and what with the usual insane dancefloor antics and the friendliest crowd in the east there’s sure to be a lot of love in the room.

To celebrate here is an exclusive Ulysses82 edit fresh from my hard drive.

It’s been a great year!!

It’s Ain’t it Black tonight at the vibey (but ever sketchy) Favela chic, Great Eastern St.

Expect the usual synth heavy 80s funk and electro selection from 7oel, Food Soundsystem and me and christophe.

I’m in a ‘wishing I was still on holiday’ kind of mood so just as well I’m on early (thinking a moody-downbeat-electro set could be in order)

It’s always a killer session and with a live set from Jason Jermaine this could be the one that takes it next level.

Sometimes we take a track and really funk it up, this is just case of cutting out the chaff. It’s obviously a classic funk track, but does it really need 2 and half minutes of guitar solo?

I thought not.

an easy way to lose your way

clubs

When you play out a couple of times a week it can hard keeping your focus. You can drift into a semi-automatic routine; you know certain records will work in a certain order and you can end up djing by numbers.

It doesn’t help that some of the places you play may not be exactly condusive to a pure djing experience. Bad sound, overbearing bar managers, disinterested punters can all make it hard not to feel justified in phoning a gig in.

This can easy become a self-perpetuating circle as there is nothing more soul destroying than spending five hours feeling like a overpaid, under employed jukebox.

The best remedy to all this is to remember why you are djing in the first place. If you are any sort of dj then that has to involve a passion and a love of music. If you can cultivate that passion, even in challenging environments, then you will always be learning and be getting something from playing and in turn that will affect the people you are playing too.

So anyway here’s an excerpt form last night’s session (it’s live so it’s bit rough and ready).
