FRIDAY FREAK
freak_music
Something a little different for this week, inspired by a hot & freaky vibe in the smoke last nite. While the shot above is the Egyptian Lover, the track I’m posting is actually from ‘Uncle Jam’s Army’, though he is on production duties & vocals. Uncle Jam’s Army we’re a West Coast outfit that had both the pharaoh of electro-sleaze and Ice-T pass through their ranks in the early eighties.
It’s got the standard electro format of a couple of versus followed by drawn out instrumental breakdown (think there’s even a 10 minute jam out there) but it’s got a killer groove and a distinctive enough palette to stand out from cuts of the same era.
Doesn’t have quite the same resonance in the daylight hours though: definitely one for sweaty nites & neon lights.

COSMIC CONNECTIONS — MAN FROM ATLANTIS
man from atlantis_mixtapes_music
This month on Disco Jesus’ Cosmic Connections show Firemusic’s very own ‘Man from Atlantis’ has the pleasure of putting together a special guest mix trawled from his subterranean archives. Expect to hear spacey prog, cosmic soul & vocoder funk in the mix as part of this strange but beautiful 2 hour odyssey.
The show goes live tonite on Deep Frequency FM between 8pm – 10pm or you’ll be able to download the show from the archives once it’s aired here.
In case you’ve never heard a Man from Atlantis mix before or want to get your head into that special place before tonite’s show, indulge yourself with the first 3 mixes in his ‘Odyssey’ series.

FRIDAY FUSION

There’s no doubting the cosmic spacefunk credentials of this number. You could guess that it has a 1973 flavour but its production values are way ahead of its time. Brad Miller is the audiophile head behind this one but you won’t find anything in MMO’s back catalogue to come close to this baby.

Rest In Power — GURU
music
Can’t believe that GURU passed away yesterday aged just 43. I remember as a stoned 16 year old bumping into him in a service station after the Phoenix festival. Got him to sign my cassette sleeve of Step In the Arena, despite the fact that Donald Byrd was in the same room, my only interest was in the GURU. He could of brushed me off or simply told me to f-off, but he didn’t he was cool. He signed it then made the clenched fist sign and got back on his tour bus. Was head nodding to ‘Who’s Gonna Take the Weight?’ all the way home.
We’ve lost a big one. Dig out the classics, turn it up loud and remember a great MC.
FRIDAY (COSMIC) FUSION
music_unified theory
Had a few options in mind for today, but having spent the week getting into a new mix from Man from Atlantis (soon to drop on Deep Frequency FM) it felt right to go for something with a proggy/cosmic feel – and where best to go for a track like that than early 80′s Germany.
The group Eloy have had a long and colouful career, and like a lot of acts from the same period their output can be pretty hit & miss – with maybe one cut per album that’s saying anything. This tune ‘Horizons’ is taken from Eloy’s 1980 LP ‘Colours’ – a Cosmic Connections classic.

This is dope. Put together by Ridley Scott protege Carl Erik Rinsch, this self funded short is apparently a teaser for a full length feature that Rinsch has in mind. Jokingly described as a mix between 2001, Bladerunner and Doctor Zhivago with a bit of Bourne-style action (I’m not laughing, I’m trying too busy re-arranging my trousers) this could be one to watch out for.
You get the feeling that the District 9 / Children of Men style of ‘realistic’ Sci-fi could bare some incredible leaps for this kind of movie.

This one’s strictly for the hardcore. We’re off to Finland 1973. Cat by the name of Eero Koivistoinen is putting the finishing touches to his ‘Wahoo’ LP, which would become the landmark of his career. After a previous record which mixed psychedelic rock, poetry and modern jazz, Eero had finally found the fusion.
This particular cut ’6 Down’ is typical of the genre with a relentless driving groove and some fierce soloing — come on in girls, the water’s jazzy…
