MUSIC FROM THE FUTURE (PART 2)
music_scifi_unified theory

Taken from 1981′s Outland this is the only track from Jerry Goldsmith’s score that’s worth checking. True to the genre it’s from the ‘Recreation Room’ scene in the film, and though certainly not a classic it at least sounds ‘futuristic’ with a Goblin-esque moodiness and discordant stabs. Yet this is pretty tame when compared to his far-out analogue filter cranking from Logan’s Run only a few years earlier (we’ll hit that one next).

It’s a week late, but we’ve finally got the download page up and working for the debut Ulysses82 Ep objectif:lune.
If you have been following closely you may well have some of the tracks already, but this is more about saying thanks for all the support we have recieved over the past year/18 months, than being super-fresh. If you’ve made the effort to get in contact via our myspace or facebook, sent us an email, left a comment on a blog somewhere or come down to one of our gigs, then this is for you-it really is the best reason we have for doing what we do. Special thanks also to the bloggers, deejays and radio stations who have supported us and inspired us in equal measures-Koen at Boogie Business, Danny/redrack’em, Black Shag at Beat Electric, the INX crew, Yo Mama, the sweatbreakers (aka Ain’t it Black), frisky , Inie, manny at citinite, Ad bourke (your remix is almost done!) and Dan and Anne at Coco Electrik.
We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here in the UK, but it feels like that kind of day anyway.
Next stop Moon Base Alpha.
MUSIC FROM THE FUTURE

{This was supposed to be Friday Fusion day but since the Star Wars post from a couple of days ago sparked some serious internal debating, I think we’ve got a whole new series to explore — tracks from our favorite Sci-Fi / Films that imagine what tomorrows music might sound like — usually heard in a bar/club scene, so without further ado…}
Rollerball’s Executive Party. Classic, always makes me chuckle to myself when I hear it. Can imagine us at a futuristic party taking some groovy smart drugs and chilling on white sofas with chicks all around us with this playing in the background. Rob K had it on an old comp and I used to play along to it on the bass and then wank.
Don’t confuse it with Excutive Dance Party on the same soundtrack which Andre Previn also wrote which has some lovely synth work but is a 12 bar blues composition. The rest of the soundtrack is all classical shit but some of it works well with the film. There’s loads of info online of course.

IS HIP HOP DEAD?
culture_music
By coincidence found another piece from Simon Reynolds today, this time on the dire state of Hip Hop. In fairness he’s really talking about the commercial US kind, but it’s a thought provoking article nonetheless, particularly for those who love the genre (like myself).
If this is the Future, how come the music sounds so lame…?

Simon Reynolds on the music from that classic Star Wars ‘Cantina’ scene, taken from the excellent Loops new music journal.

FUSION FRIDAY
music_unified theory

Bitch of a week. Thank God it’s Fusion Friday. After brother Murray’s jazzual musings last time, I thought I’d hit it with an all out banger — this one for me is the very definition of ‘fusion’ — mixing up the styles just the way I like it: a killer synth line, a disco-like guitar riff, afro percussion, seriously deep solo’s and a power house drummer. Taken from the Pacific Express LP ‘On Time’.

Objectif: Lune
music_ulysses82
It’s all Dam-Funk‘s fault.
After weeks and months procrastinating over what to do with the ever increasing Archive de Ulysses82-it was the chance to hand over some ‘cheap heat’ to the west coast’s leader of the nu-funk revolution, that finally prompted us to get our act together.
The result is a 4 track ep of edits and versions we have played and given to friends over the past 6-9 months or so. It’s a chance for those of you weird enough not to be checking hypemachine every week for new beats to catch up and also a chance for us to say thank you for all the support and amazing feedback we’ve received over the last year. The EP is called objectif: lune and will be available to download, here, for free next week.
In the meantime, in honour of a great night out with friends last night, here is a track that has never been posted anywhere -but has been played out by us and Red Rack’em (God bless him) a few times.
Enjoy.

Analog Soul
music_synth

Although probably better known for his 1983 killer Polyphase-I’ve always had a softspot for this Aaron Broomfield track. “I’m Gonna Miss You” has it all, killer hook, amazing groove and just the right amount of synthed out flavour to keep give it an edge. It really is analog soul at it’s finest and one of those tracks that you think about editing but the more you listen to it, the less you realise you have to add.
Saying that, if I ever end up in a 6 piece retro 80 funk band (wearing way too much skin tight purple nylon) then this would be always on the set list.
Oh and you can check the video here, in all it’s vhs glory.
(gotta to get me one of those suits.)

FUSION FRIDAY

This track is from legendary Miles’ album ‘Big Fun’, recorded between ’69 & ’72. Though this track takes it’s name from UK guitar don John McLaughlin, this track is all about the rhythm section. Check out the dark, minimal bass, Jack de Johnette’s timeless breaks and Teo Macero’s mix-work on the desk slicing it all up, and it starts to feel like a sonic echo 20 years ahead of it’s time. It’s raw and it grooves like a b*stard. Grab your cans and give it a crank. Nice one, Mr Davis.
