IN DEN KOSMOS
music_ scifi

Rightly or wrongly I can’t get this track out of my head. It’s by the Stern Combo Meissen, a prog outfit from Germany (quelle surprise) and sits somewhere left of Supermax — except these guys sing in their native tongue.
From the excellent Soundtracks Of Eastern Germany’s Adventures In Space.

It came to me while working the graveyard shift at the Chicago Post Office
music

Marshall Jefferson on the story behind ‘Move Your Body‘.
After that, I went into the Music Box and gave DJ Ron Hardy a copy while he was playing. I didn’t expect him to play it right away; usually i just gave him a copy and he’d listen to it later and maybe play it the next weekend. This time he put it in the cassette machine right away. I saw his head quickly go into a violent bobbing motion and I knew he liked the song. He immediately put it on and played it 6 times in a row, putting on a sound effects record while he rewound the tape.
From there it got to be the biggest song in the Music Box.
DOPE ON PLASTIC
clubs_ mixtapes_ music
Bangin’ session at Plastic People last night, full props to Alex Nut, Floating Points & the rest of the spinners. Heard a solid selection of new skool joints, but the real highlight for me came from a 20 minute rotation of Golden Era Hip Hop classics. Not the obvious selections you’d get on some lame compilation but the real deal.
Much like this killer set from Jez at Innersounds. Posted this in our previous incarnation, but long overdue a re visit.

THE FUTURE (LAMENTING HONG KONG)
music_ scifi

Taking a while to get sights like this out of my head and except the reality of being back in the smoke. Compared to London, Hong Kong really does look and feel like that futuristic metropolis you’ve always imagined. Till the next time…

FUSION FRIDAY
music_ unified theory

Throwing down the gauntlet on this one (to my fellow band mates at least) in a bid to find the definitive ‘fusion’ selection. This particular track, ‘Aurora Borealis’ by Finnish legend Jukka Tolonen falls in that beautiful synth-led space between prog & jazz fusion.
The original does get a little noodly so I’ve cut it down from 12.56 mins to a more punchy 4.47 — this section is essentially a track within the main track. We used to jam on something similar but never quite touched this. It’s the sort of number that feels right at home on a Man From Atlantis mixtape.
Al & Tommy over to you…

Cloudy City Funk
mixtapes_ music
With upcoming releases for Dam Funk, Ad Bourke and Rozzi Daime, Citinite are clearly on the verge of massive things. Their blueprint for 21st century funk not only sounds lightyears ahead of the competition, but increasingly feels like the natural inheritor to the legacy of underground, electronic music set out over the last 30 years by freaks with synths in Chicago, Detriot, Minneapolis and wherever else .
Next month they are hosting a party with LuckyMe at the Lightbox (an amzing looking club in Vauxhall with thousands of LEDs embeddded in the walls !!!). It promises to be one of the parties of the year and a primer (for anyone interested) in what the future sounds like.
If you can’t wait that long, Manni has put together a mix packed full of exclusive unreleased killers (tracklisting below the jump)
I can’t think of any thing else that comes as close to collectively sounding like the music Prince would be making if he still had something to prove.

Yo Mama’s First Birthday
edits_ ulysses82
It’s been a while, but after an extended summer break, Ulysses82 are back in the game.
We will be joining Riki, Sammy and the boys at Catch on Kingsland Road this Saurday to celebrate a year of dancefloor sweat, the highest quality party music and widly inappropiate whiteboy swagger. With main man 7oel and CWD also in the mix this is going to be a ceiling bashing, party freaking MONSTER of a session.
It’s no exaggeration to say that the YO MAMA parties have been some of the most enjoyable gigs we have ever played. There is something about the dark, slightly scuzzy venue, packed full of people who are only interested in getting a sweat on that encapsulates everything a Saturday night should be about.
There is a Yo Mama mix over at LDNNEZ if you need to get in the mood early and rather than turn up to the party empty handed, here is a super exclusive Ulysses82 track which we was originally put together specifically for the night and is directly inspired by the music the boys were playing.
See you on the dancefloor.
