Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ‘Dune’ is the great unmade 70’s scifi film.
It’s greatness and it’s unmade-ness are, of course, directly related, but it remains an elusive vision of a different direction for scifi film to explore.
If you’re in London for the next month you can check out this exhibition of concept artwork for the film, featuring artwork by Moebius, H.R Giger and Chris Foss alongside commissioned work made in response by three international contemporary artists Steven Claydon, Matthew Day Jackson and Vidya Gastaldon.
Looks fantastic, though if truth be known, I’m a great fan of the, much derided, Lychian epic. I think Jodorowsky would have made a(nother) film about the 70s and psychedelica which would have looked incredible but made no sense to anybody who wasn’t out of their mind on acid.

The Birth of Planet Rock

People sometimes ask what is behind the name Ulysses 82.
First off, those people probably need to brush up on their french-japanese animation.
The rest of it, the more esoteric elements, are summed up in the first two paragraphs of this fantastic piece ‘You Can’t Stop Us Now: Birth of Planet Rock‘;
“It was an age of wonder. It was the era of the pocket calculator and the digital watch. Toy manufacturer Coleco introduced the first electronic pocket-sized sports games. Video arcades were popping up in malls all over America; games like Pac Man, Centipede and Asteroids were supplanting the pinball machine as a teenager’s favorite pastime. The world of the Jetsons was slowly coming into being.
For three decades Hollywood turned out low budget sci-fi flicks that depicted a world ran by computers and policed by robots. All one had to do was to turn on the TV to get a look at what the future held for us. With all of the talk about technological advancement back then, people wondered what music would sound like in the future.

Mega-City 2

It’s early days, but apparently there is a new Judge Dredd movie in the works and, more importantly, it’s rumoured to based on an Alex Garland script. Nice!
Could be some long needed cinematic redemption for one of British sci-fi’s unsung heroes.
And let’s face it, neither time nor hollywood has been kind to 2000AD, but there is a wealth of incredible ideas hidden away in there.
I’ve always thought that Halo Jones would make a killer HBO series.
And whilst we are on the subject of 2000AD, here’s a great article on the evolution of the architecture of mega-city-one.

Third Floor Classics

For a while there attica blues were the hottest shit around (at least on the third floor of our house). Their remixes were the ones you flipped to first and they found ways to cut up drums that few could (or would) ever match.
The problem was their style never seemed to quite fit any of the lazy musical pigeon holes of the day; not quite soul music, not quite ‘trip-hop’, but somewhere in between a lot of things.
The albums never quite worked for me, but some of those remixes were (and are) next level.
On this one they took on Courtney Pine’s “Tryin’ Times” channeling the spirit of Elvin Jones through an MPC 2000 and seemingly pointed the way for future generations of jazzers to go and explore the spaceways.
It didn’t quite work out that way-it usually doesn’t.
But this still sounds as if it has something new about it-just like jazz is supposed to.
